Spire Leeds Hospital · Roundhay
Mr Richard Bell is an NHS consultant surgeon at St James’s University Hospital, Leeds – one of Europe’s largest hepatobiliary (liver, gallbladder and bile duct) and transplant units – and sees private patients from Leeds and wider Yorkshire.

Areas of practice
Consultations are unhurried, and every plan is explained in plain terms – including when surgery is not the best option. Where scans or tests are needed, they are usually arranged on the same site.
Keyhole gallbladder removal for gallstone pain, cholecystitis (gallbladder inflammation) and polyps (small growths), and assessment of bile duct stones and complex biliary (bile duct) problems.
Inguinal (groin), umbilical (belly button), epigastric (upper abdomen) and incisional (through a previous scar) hernias, including more complex abdominal wall repair after previous surgery.
Assessment of liver lesions (abnormal areas) seen on scan including the management of liver cysts, benign (non-cancerous) liver tumours and primary (starting in the liver) and metastatic (secondary) liver cancers.
About
Mr Bell qualified from the University of Leeds and completed his surgical training in hepatobiliary and general surgery in Yorkshire, followed by an advanced fellowship in hepatobiliary and liver transplant surgery at the Leeds Liver Unit. He has been working as a consultant at St James’s University Hospital since 2023.
His NHS practice centres on liver resection (removal of part of the liver) for primary and metastatic (secondary) liver tumours along with surgery for benign (non-cancerous) hepatobiliary disease. He sees patients from throughout Yorkshire for these conditions. He also specialises in surgery for gallstone disease and abdominal wall hernia surgery.
He has a Doctorate of Medicine from The University of Leeds and has published and presented widely across a variety of fields with a focus on improving outcomes and recovery for patients undergoing hepatobiliary surgery.

Getting seen
You do not always need a GP referral to be seen privately, although most insurers ask for one. The team can advise on what applies to you.
Call your insurer for a pre-authorisation code before your first appointment, then contact the practice with your policy details. Mr Bell is registered with most major UK insurers – the team can confirm yours.
An initial consultation is £195. If you go on to need tests or surgery, Spire Leeds offers fixed-price packages, confirmed in writing before treatment.
Referral letters can be emailed to admin@rbell-surgery.com. Mr Bell is happy to discuss patients by phone.
